Inspiring moderation at a global conference, enabling scientific excellence and cultural reflection with a focus on female empowerment and unconscious bias.

Initial situation & challenge

An international research network organised a two-day conference on photonic quantum systems. The participants were high-calibre scientists and experts from all over the world.

As well as the complex technical content, a further challenge was the sensitive handling of biases in excellence research, particularly with regard to gender perception and equality.

A moderator with empathy and cultural sensitivity was needed to strike the right balance between scientific depth and social responsibility.

Approach & implementation

Working with the organising team, I developed a dramaturgy that allowed for exchange, reflection and controversy, while keeping the specialist topics at the forefront.

I delivered a keynote speech on unconscious bias and led an interactive discussion in the style of a fireside chat, in which personal experiences and systemic issues were debated.

Through targeted interventions in panels and open discussions, I encouraged participants to question their own thought patterns. This was achieved without moralising, but with depth and commitment.

How the challenges were resolved

  • Complex topics were made accessible through the use of clear language and structured questioning.
  • The tensions between a focus on excellence and equality were openly addressed.
  • Targeted dialogue gave space to different cultural perspectives.
  • Science was combined with attitude, without pathos but with impact.

What our client said

„Not only did everyone enjoy the inspiring input and well conducted moderation during the conference, but the prior communication in preparation was absolutely excellent.“

Summary

The participants felt inspired and professionally challenged, and they felt recognised as individuals. The atmosphere created enabled eye-level dialogue, moving beyond traditional conference formats.

Where the customer is today

The network would like to see this format continued for future events. Both internally and externally, the conference was recognised as a flagship project for diversity and scientific integrity.
