Leading is serving others. It requires a high level of sensitivity for the needs of other people.<\/p>\n<p>The principle goes back to the big questions people ask across cultures.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>In what kind of world do we want to live?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How can we be happy?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What purpose do we see in what we do?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_K._Greenleaf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Greenleaf<\/a>\u00a0saw leadership as a service to others. He coined the term <em>Servant Leadership<\/em> and is considered to be its founder.<\/p>\n<p>He was strongly influenced by German author <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hermann_Hesse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hermann Hesse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The Journey to the East<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Hesse&#8217;s books are known throughout the world. Some admirer say that his body of work contributes to global understanding and continues to promote intercultural dialogue to this day.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Greenleaf was particularly inspired by the novel <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Journey_to_the_East\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Journey to the East<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(The original title is <em>\u00bbMorgenlandfahrt\u00ab<\/em>). This novel contributed much to the development of his ideas of Servant Leadership.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.untoldcolors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Boca_Raton_9Mar15_1004_765x520.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1659\" src=\"http:\/\/www.untoldcolors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Boca_Raton_9Mar15_1004_765x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"765\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.untoldcolors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Boca_Raton_9Mar15_1004_765x520.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.untoldcolors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Boca_Raton_9Mar15_1004_765x520-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>The Metaphor of the Journey<\/h3>\n<p>The story features a group of people who simply call themselves <em>the League<\/em>. The group is accompanied by a happy and modest servant named Leo. When Leo disappears the journey loses its direction and <em>the League<\/em> falls apart.<\/p>\n<p>In the end it becomes clear that the servant Leo was the one who kept the Journey together. Throughout he was the Servant Leader who inspired the group.<\/p>\n<h3>The Eternal Seeker<\/h3>\n<p>The novel <em>The Journey to the East<\/em> is full of symbols and metaphors. A leitmotif is the search for the ideal as well as the pursuit of mental maturity, development and life-long learning. The narrator is the eternal seeker.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00bbHe who travels far will often see things far removed from what he believed was Truth.\u00ab<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The motif of the Journey stands for the cycle of life. A never-ending process which involves adversity, self-doubt and many obstacles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.untoldcolors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Bagan_to_Magwe_17_765x520.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1660\" src=\"http:\/\/www.untoldcolors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Bagan_to_Magwe_17_765x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"765\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.untoldcolors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Bagan_to_Magwe_17_765x520.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.untoldcolors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Bagan_to_Magwe_17_765x520-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>The Law of Service<\/h3>\n<p>In the end there is an important finding that is reflected in the <em>Law of Service<\/em>. In the novel Leo says&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00bbHe who wishes to live long must serve, but he who wishes to rule does not live long.\u00ab<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This realization is what makes Servant Leadership possible.
